Join me for on a spring hike along part of Koyasanâs Choishi Stupa route in Wakayama prefecture. 𥟠This ancient trail is part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range. ð¯ðµ It was added to UNESCOâs ðºð³World Heritage list in 2004. This ancient pilgrimage route dates to the time Buddhist monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) founded the Koyasan monastic complex about twelve centuries ago.
Stone signposts standing over 3 meters called stupas mark the route to Koyasan and are set at 109-meter intervals. We will join the route at signpost 60 and pass the final signpost at Danjo Garan. Please enjoy counting down each of the pillars as you proceed to the summit of Koyasan. â©ïžð²â°ïž
We will begin our hike outside Kii-Hosokawa station ð on the Nankai Koyasan line from Namba. We will hike 3.5 km through the Ito District and have a short rest at the Yatatejaya before joining the Choishi Stupa pilgrimage route. You may purchase yakimochi, use the restroom and vending machines.
We will continue on Choishi Stupa pilgrimage route for 6.5km. We will enter Koyasanâs famous Daimon gate (two fierce-looking statues guard this monument, which is the main gate to the town) and visit 2 temples, Danjo Garan and Kongobuji.
Danjo Garan - one of the most important places in Koyasan, Danjo Garan religious precincts are comprised of many religious and historical monuments. You may choose to enter Konpon Daito (Great Pagoda) ¥500 and Kondo (Golden Hall) ¥500.
We will also visit Kongobuji temple, head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism. The temple contains beautiful screen paintings and Japanâs largest rock garden, the Banryutei Â¥1,000, optional entry.
