Let’s enjoy a summer visit to Inunakiyama tiered rock pools and Shippōryū-ji Temple, which combines beautiful mountain scenery, cultural history, refreshing river pools, and a relaxing hot spring experience— all within easy reach of Osaka.
The walk begins in the peaceful village of Inunakiyama, nestled in nature beside Mt. Onaru, home to Inunakiyama Onsenkyō. This is the only remaining natural hot spring resort in Osaka Prefecture. We will follow the temple approach (参道 sandō) and pass a magnificent 38-metre-tall tree, believed to be the tallest in Osaka Prefecture, before entering the forested valley.
The trail follows the clear waters of the Kashii River, crossing small bridges and passing a series of waterfalls and natural rock pools. Highlights include Kai no Taki, Ryōkai no Taki, the seven Tower Falls (Tō no Taki), and the sacred Gyōja Falls, where Shugendō practitioners still perform traditional waterfall purification training.
After exploring the temple we will hang out at the river and have lunch. You may put your feet in the river and even wade in places.
We will return to Inunakiyama and go to an optional hot spring to soak at Minamitei Onsen (み奈美亭). Admission is ¥1,200 and includes access to the indoor baths and the relaxing outdoor open-air bath.

Shipporyuji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple nestled in the forests of Mount Inunaki in Osaka Prefecture. Revered as one of Japan’s oldest centers of Shugendō mountain ascetic practice, it continues to serve as both an active place of worship and a destination for hikers, pilgrims, and visitors seeking the area’s natural and spiritual atmosphere.
According to temple tradition, Shipporyuji was founded in 661 CE by En no Gyōja (En no Ozunu), the legendary founder of Shugendō. The temple is now the head temple of the Inunaki branch of the Shingon school and has long been associated with rigorous mountain training. Unlike the nearby sacred training grounds of Mount Ōmine, Mount Inunaki has historically permitted women to participate in Shugendō practice, earning it the nickname “Women’s Ōmine.”
The temple precincts combine religious monuments with the surrounding mountain landscape. Highlights include a large statue of Fudō Myōō, numerous halls and stone Buddhist figures, and forest paths leading to sacred waterfalls where ascetic training has traditionally taken place. The nearby Gyōja no Taki waterfall remains an important site for practitioners of waterfall meditation and purification rituals.
Mount Inunaki is closely tied to the famous “faithful dog” legend. According to tradition, a hunter killed his barking dog after it frightened away a deer, only to discover that the dog had actually saved him from a giant serpent. Deeply remorseful, the hunter became a monk at Shipporyuji, and the mountain was later named Inunaki (“Dog’s Bark”) in memory of the story. Visitors can still find memorials connected with this legend along the approach to the temple.

🌿夏の犬鳴山・七宝瀧寺ハイキング＆川遊び＆温泉♨️
大阪市内から気軽に行ける、美しい渓谷、歴史ある寺院、清流の天然岩風呂、そして温泉を一度に楽しめる夏のお出かけです！
ハイキングは、雄大な自然に囲まれた犬鳴山温泉郷からスタートします。犬鳴山は、大阪府で唯一残る天然温泉郷として知られています。
まずは七宝瀧寺へと続く歴史ある参道を歩きます。途中には、大阪府内で最も高いといわれる高さ約38mの巨木を眺め、その後は緑豊かな渓谷へ入っていきます。
コースは清らかな樫井川沿いを進み、小さな橋を渡りながら、いくつもの滝や天然の岩場、水遊びができる淵を巡ります。
見どころは、
- 開の滝
- 両界の滝
- 塔の滝（七宝瀧）
- 修験道の行者が現在も滝行を行う「行者の滝」
など、自然と信仰が調和した美しい景観です。
七宝瀧寺を参拝した後は、川辺でゆっくりランチタイム。足を川につけたり、場所によっては浅瀬を歩いたりして涼むこともできます。
ハイキング終了後は犬鳴山温泉へ戻り、希望者はみ奈美亭で温泉を楽しみましょう♨️

📋七宝瀧寺について
七宝瀧寺は、大阪府犬鳴山の深い森の中に建つ歴史ある寺院です。日本でも最も古い修験道の霊場の一つとして知られ、現在も修験道の修行が行われています。ハイカーや参拝者、自然や歴史を楽しみたい多くの人々が訪れる場所です。
寺伝によると、七宝瀧寺は661年に修験道の開祖とされる役行者（役小角）によって開かれました。現在は真言宗犬鳴派の大本山であり、古くから厳しい山岳修行の場として知られています。
また、大峰山では長く女性の入山が禁じられていましたが、犬鳴山では古くから女性も修行に参加できたことから、「女人大峰」とも呼ばれてきました。
境内には、大きな不動明王像や多くのお堂・石仏があり、周囲の山々と調和した神秘的な景観が広がっています。森の中には修験者が滝行を行ってきた滝が点在し、中でも行者の滝は現在も滝行や水行が行われる重要な修行場です。
犬鳴山は、有名な「義犬伝説（忠犬伝説）」の舞台としても知られています。
伝説によると、猟師は獲物を逃がしたと思い、吠えた愛犬を殺してしまいます。しかし実際には、その犬は巨大な大蛇から主人を守るために吠えていたことが後になって判明しました。深く後悔した猟師は七宝瀧寺で僧となり、その出来事にちなみ、この山は「犬鳴山」と呼ばれるようになったと伝えられています。
現在でも参道には、この伝説にゆかりのある史跡や供養碑を見ることができます。
