⛩️Mt. Shosha/Engyo-Ji - Himeji City Hike🚠

About
Join me for a hike up the shaded paths of
Mt. Shosha - a 371 m mountain northwest of Himeji City - known for Engyo-ji temple. We will enjoy nature, shrines, temples, hiking paths and views of Awaji island, Seto inland sea and Shikoku.

After the hike, we will descend via the Mount Shosha Ropeway, which takes approximately four minutes from the summit to the base. From the ropeway, you can enjoy panoramic views of Himeji city and the Seto Inland Sea.

Trip Itinerary

11:10 Meet at Himeji Station (from Osaka) - outside Central Exit

9:45am - Meet in front of Bridge Gate (upstairs) JR Osaka station
10:00-11:03 ¥1,460 JR Rapid Service (新快速) for Himeji
11:23-11:47 ¥320 - Shinki bus #43 from #18 bus stop to Shosha Higashizaka, starting point of hike

13:00 lunch - bring a bento or eat Udon/Oden at Hazuki Chaya restaurant in front of Maniden temple.

16:15 ¥700 - descend Mt. Shosha Ropeway
16:23-16:47 ¥320 - Shinki bus to Himeji station
16:47 Disband - O-tsukaresama deshita!

Optional Onsen
Taihei-No-Yu Onsen in Tarumi, Kobe on the way back to Osaka for anyone interested.

We will hike approximately 7-8 kilometers and gain 526m in elevation. There are plenty of vending machines on this hike. Please stay hydrated!

History of Engyo-ji Temple
Founded in 966 by monk Shoku Shonin, this large Tendai Buddhist temple complex sits on a mountaintop surrounded by forest, including ancient cedars. It is called Mt. Hiei of the west.

Its vast grounds are dotted with nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, including the Maniden Hall, Daikodo Hall, and Jogyo-do Hall. It's also famous as a filming location for the movie "The Last Samurai" (Ken Watanabe & Tom Cruise, 2003) and historical dramas.

姫路市の北西に位置する標高371mの書写山（しょしゃざん）へ、一緒にハイキングに行きませんか？この山は圓教寺（えんぎょうじ）というお寺で有名です。自然、神社、お寺、登山道、そして淡路島・瀬戸内海・四国の景色を楽しみましょう。

ハイキングの後は、書写山ロープウェイで下山します。山頂から麓までは約4分で、ロープウェイからは姫路市街や瀬戸内海を一望できます。

• 10:00～11:03 JR新快速（姫路行き）¥1,460
• 11:23～11:47 神姫バス43番（18番乗り場）で「書写東坂」へ ¥320（登山口）

13:00 昼食
お弁当持参可、または摩尼殿前の「葉月茶屋」でうどん・おでんも楽しめます。

16:23～16:47 神姫バスで姫路駅へ戻ります ¥320

圓教寺の歴史

圓教寺は、966年に性空（しょうくう）上人によって開かれた天台宗の寺院です。古代杉に囲まれた山上に広がる大伽藍は「西の比叡山」とも呼ばれています。

境内には、国の重要文化財に指定されている摩尼殿、大講堂、常行堂などが点在しています。また、映画『ラスト・サムライ』（2003年／渡辺謙・トム・クルーズ出演）や歴史ドラマのロケ地としても有名です。
