A bunch of us watched the fireworks from our kayaks on Lake Wylie last year. It was an absolutely AMAZING experience! There was obviously a lot of boat traffic. However, we were able to stay in a safe area between Papa Doc's and the bridge (see map pin below). Once it was close to showtime, the larger boats were close enough together that they didn't move much. It felt safe in our group with them nearby. We were able to safely hug the shoreline most of the time before and after the show. You don't need to be an expert kayaker to do this, but you should be comfortable in your kayak at night and be able to swim well in an emergency. Unfortunately, there will not be rental kayaks available.
I have posted the event from 5pm until 11:59pm to provide plenty of time to grab dinner at Papa Doc's at 5pm, launch our kayaks and be in the water by 8pm, and perhaps wind down at Papa Doc's after the fireworks. You don't necessarily need to attend the whole time. You would just need to be in the water beside Papa
Doc's by 8pm. It would be advisable to stay with the group until after the fireworks end at 10pm to make everyone more visible. I would suggest arriving early due to the crowd and to make parking easier.
Last year, some of the attendees parked at Papa Doc's and others parked at the boat ramp next door. They would only allow those with boats (including a kayak) park in the boat launch parking lot. Papa Doc's does have a dock of their own you can use, but their parking lot has limited space.
Make sure you bring what you need on the day of our paddle. This list will be different for everyone, but here are some things to consider: water, food/snacks, sunscreen, flashlight, flashlight that straps on head, binoculars, camera, waterproof phone float, hat, sunglasses, water shoes, etc. I will have red, green, and white safety lights for you to strap to your kayak for visibility.
Feel free to start a discussion or email me with any suggestions or concerns. You may be able to bring a few guests, but please email me in advance so the size of our group stays manageable. I will attempt to check the messages on the meetup site periodically prior to launching. I can't guarantee I will be able to get cell service from the area, but I will definitely try.
Be sure to check back for updates as the weather comes into focus. I'm looking forward to getting out on the water with everyone!
