We're all visual designers, so photography is a natural part of what we do. And we've started the annual tradition of making our summer/June meeting into a photo walk somewhere in Kansas City. It's a chance to stretch your wings a bit, and try new things with your digital camera.

reStart, Inc. will be our destination this year. Here's what they told us:

reStart has been serving homeless persons in Kansas City for more than 30 years and we are currently in the process of rebranding our organization with help from a local advertising agency that has chosen us as their beneficiary this year. They are helping us redesign our website and revise our mission statement, tag line, and logo, and they have advised us that we should add many more photos to all of our materials. While we have gotten better in the past year about taking photos of client activities, none of us are professional photographers, so the quality of our photos varies widely. We also don’t have nearly the range of photos that the advertising agency wants for the complete redesign they have in mind.

Because we are in the process of renovating several floors of our nearly 100-year old facility to improve health and safety for our guests, your group could also capture images of the construction process that would be very helpful to us in publicizing our capital campaign to potential funders. Our current campaign is called, “Home for Good,” and we are raising funds to renovate four floors of our facility for single men and women. (Our family units and youth shelter were renovated during an earlier campaign.)

For both of these reasons, we would love to have your group exercise their creativity and help us gather some innovative images that would help us communicate our mission and impact to our supporters and to the Kansas City community at large. We also believe we could provide a great experience for your group. reStart is one of the most inclusive homeless service providers in Kansas City, serving all populations - singles, couples, gay, straight and transgendered individuals, and unaccompanied youth ages 12-18, as well as non-traditional families, persons with HIV/AIDS and individuals recently released from prison or from psychiatric hospitalization. Our clients range in age from infant to elderly and are racially and culturally diverse. Because we have all clients sign photo releases at intake, we could give you full access to our clients as well as to our facility. Your members would get to experience the many facets of a large, multi-service organization in the urban core and we would benefit from the experience of seeing our agency through others’ eyes (or others’ lenses)—giving us a new perspective on who we are and who we serve.

So here's how it works:

BRING YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA and any lenses or accessories you'd like.

At the end of the night, we'll have everyone upload their work to a private Flickr pool, and we'll present it to reStart. All photos will become THEIR property but you are free to use in your own portfolio or presentation of your work. All clients are photo released so you won't have to worry about that.

This is also the night we'll have our semi-annual raffle drawing for a one-year free subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud!

Come prepared to have some photographic "wing-stretching" and benefit our community! See you then!
