Where We’ve Come From Tells Us Where We’re Going: Past Lessons, Future Vision - Dr. Karen Voorhees

Let’s explore what we have learned from the past, experience in the present, and predict toward an Integral future.

Details:

Dr. Karen Voorhees takes us on a guided meditation through Integral’s stages of human development. She does this from the imagined point of view of a Stone Age priestess who has a vision “up the ages” during a near death experience. On her return to her body she struggles to convey what she thinks the gods have shown her to her frightened people. They are going through a transition of era that parallels ours in its immensity -- from foraging to farming.

In this imaginal journey we follow the trajectory of our collective evolution from the deep past up through the present, and on into an Integral future. Can we identify any recurring deep patterns that can help guide us today in our own path forward?

Bio:

During my teens, Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings so enchanted me that I ended up in medieval studies at UC Berkeley. In 1979 I was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to research my dissertation in Europe. While there I found my spiritual path, began meditating in earnest and discovered that there are levels of goodness, truth and beauty far beyond the intellectual.

I returned to Berkeley, finished my Ph.D. and left academia to pursue my spiritual interests. I held positions of responsibility in my spiritual teacher’s organization. Between 1996 and 1999 I spearheaded its incorporation as a 501(c)3 corporation.

Since 2003 much of my time has gone into late-life and hospice care for elderly relatives. Now I am reinventing myself again as a writer of essays and novels, tracing the long arc of our collective past and following it into the future.

I also love art, music, song and dance of many kinds, big ideas and silly fun, nature, and potato latkes at Saul’s deli.
