Introduction to Integral Project Design for Social Transformation
-with Andrew Becker, Director of Integral Without Borders
Why do so many projects fail, despite rigorous planning? How can we lead social change efforts to address complex and dynamic challenges? How do we understand and work with diverse worldviews? And how do we develop our own consciousness, so that our biases and weaknesses as leaders do not adversely affect the success of our efforts?
Integral Without Borders has been working to answer these questions for years, and along the way we have discovered certain principles and practices that can help us hold and engage with greater Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (VUCA). This workshop is designed to help participants discover and deepen their own perception and understanding of a given issue both at the individual and collective level using Integral theory as a guiding framework.
We will primarily use the four quadrants to more comprehensively understand and work with an issue and begin to see how a project or intervention might emerge from this practice. An orientation towards the group’s sense making process will be important as we discover a collective story of the given context.
We encourage you to come with a topic in mind that you are passionate about such as climate change, community health and safety, inequality, etc.
About Andrew:
Andrew views himself as a facilitator of development who works to discover where he might encourage the emergent development of others; primarily at the community level. He has a master’s degree in Community Development and is the Executive Director of Integral Without Borders (IWB) Before joining IWB he worked for several years in Mircofinance, in both South Africa and Guatemala. In Guatemala he designed and implemented a community development program called “Community Finance Guatemala”, which empowers local leaders to support their communities through financial education workshops and savings group trainings. Andrew continues to support the program, voluntarily, as a strategic advisor and fundraiser for the program.
As he has deepened his understanding of the praxis of Integral community development, he has been able to support the local team in Guatemala to more effectively work with the interior dimensions of the communities while simultaneously supporting their exteriors. This shift towards interiors has created a greater sense of coherence and well-being among the team and the groups they work with.
As Executive Director at Integral Without Borders, Andrew is dedicated to helping others make similar shifts in their personal and professional lives and in their communities primarily through online course design and facilitation and one-on-one coaching. He believes that by increasing our awareness of the systems we inhabit and enact, and by intentionally integrating interiors into everything we do, we all can increase our capacity to more fully and consciously participate in transforming society.
