Terry Patten on Making Integral more integral
We are very excited to have one of the foremost leaders and contributors to the Integral movement joining us this month!

PLEASE NOTE: This meeting is on the 3rd Saturday, not the 2nd this month

Details: Integral Theory is such a robust “theory of everything” that it makes space for, well, pretty much every truth — even some important and timely truths, values, processes and practices that Ken Wilber has not foregrounded in his writings. Although some critics assert these omissions are signs that Integral Theory contains fundamental fatal distortions, it is also possible for Integralists to include them, and thus to make Integral Theory “more integral."

Healthy green sensibilities see the problems and limits of linear, abstract, agentic, progress-focused, and even hypermasculine or totalizing values, attitudes and modes of knowledge and action. Instead they foreground care, communion, respect for different perspectives, intuitive knowing, heart intelligence and devotion — as well as soul work, indigenous wisdom, earth-based spirituality, somatic and eco- psychology — and also the limits of growth and progress, the importance of civic engagement and responsibility, and the urgent and fundamental social transformation implied by our ecological and civilizational predicament.

Terry Patten has been doing this work for almost twenty years. He has sometimes done so via explicit theoretical innovations (for example, the recasting Wilber's “1-2-3 of God” as “the 3 Faces of God” or in his theoretical papers on “Enacting an Integral Revolution” and "Integral Soul Work.”) But much of his work has addressed Green and Orange (and Exit-Green and Exit-Orange) audiences indirectly, via teachings and communications with “Integral Inside” that address Exit-Green, Exit-Orange and healthy Green values, worldviews and sense making.

This session will begin with a short talk and high-level review of his work to make integral more integral, and will then open up into more wide-ranging conversations about the implications of these ideas — both in breakout groups and in the main room.

On February 13th, Terry will appear again to guide a second SD Integral session that will emphasize experiential We-Space practices informed by the recent social experiments he has initiated.

Terry's Bio:
Terry Patten is a philosopher, author, activist, social entrepreneur, consultant, coach, and the author of the groundbreaking book, A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos for Revolutionaries.

As an author, he co-wrote the book Integral Life Practice (with Ken Wilber, Adam Leonard and Marco Morelli) which distills ancient and modern practices into a contemporary transformational lifestyle. He has also authored three previous books and over two dozen book chapters, magazine articles and academic papers published in peer-reviewed journals.

As a philosopher-activist, he has long been a leading voice for facing, examining, and healing our global crisis through the marriage of higher consciousness and activism. As creator and host of the webcast “Beyond Awakening,” he has explored the biggest questions of our time in over a hundred public conversations with some of the world’s most prominent and dynamic thought leaders.

As a teacher and coach, he has introduced thousands of people to Integral Practice in person and over the web where he created and taught the online courses, Integral Spiritual Practice, Living the Integral Heart, An Integral Soul Journey, and Awakening Your Revolutionary Heart. And he has helped hundreds of people activate a transformative practice, realize awakened consciousness, and discover and fulfill their life purpose.

As a community organizer, he founded and leads Bay Area Integral, which gathers and supports an integral community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
