👉 Hardware Security Module (HSM) in the cloud - or: How to make c native library work in Kotlin
by Mario Bodemann
This talk will begin by establishing the critical role of Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) in modern cloud security architectures, emphasizing their importance for secure cryptographic key generation, storage, and management, particularly when dealing with sensitive operations. It will then pivot to a common practical challenge faced by developers using modern JVM languages like Kotlin: integrating with HSMs often requires interfacing with vendor-provided C native libraries. The core of the presentation will delve into the technical solution, focusing on leveraging the Java Native Interface (JNI) to create a bridge between the Kotlin application code running on the JVM and the underlying C HSM library, covering key aspects such as defining native methods, handling data type marshalling between Kotlin/Java and C, managing native memory, building the necessary shared libraries, and addressing potential pitfalls, ultimately demonstrating a practical approach to enable secure HSM operations directly from Kotlin applications deployed in the cloud.

Speaker Bios:

🗣 Mario Bodemann

I turn tech topics into digestible content. I try to keep them a blend of information and entertainment. In my daily work I look at current developments in the security space, build Android sample code and am happy to work on feedback we are receiving from users. Please feel free to approach me about security, programming, Passkeys and Yubico. I also love to talk about community building at my GDG Berlin Android.
