About us
KulturSalon Wien is an active hub for collective art appreciation and for exploring, promoting, and cultivating new interdisciplinary endeavors in Vienna. Interconnecting a wide range of independent visual and performing artists, writers, filmmakers, academics, philosophers, and socially-minded champions of creative community with a network that values cultural efflorescence, the salon is a place where creativity is supported and fostered, and where foresighted alliances are forged.
Current programs include, among others, the development of a new, "Living Art" paradigm for making the work of exceptional, contemporary voices in the arts readily accessible at diverse locations in Vienna, including a new artist showroom in 1050 Vienna; FilmStory, a weekend meetup with a closely knit community of cinephiles that integrates screenings of great, rare films with deep dive group discussion; and the development of ACT! - a new, socially and politically conscious theater ensemble.

New Plays & Production Development Initiative
A creative work group that brings together actors, writers, and friends and patrons of the arts for first encounters with new plays by international writers.
The process involves a unique sight-reading technique developed in the late 90s and last practiced by numerous theater professionals in Austria and abroad from 1999 to 2012.
Using the shtick! acting improvisation technique to discover and explore the language and performance potential of new plays, artists and others with serious interest in the development - and possible further promotion of new work for the stage - actively engage in an intimate, group workshop setting.
Who is shtick! for?
- Playwrights of new works in English (or works available in English translation).
- Actors who are able to sight-read in English, including seasoned professionals and experienced newcomers.
- Associate members of the KulturSalon Wien international friends of the arts community.
- Visitors - for more info, please see below.
Playwrights should submit a single short play (PDF or Word) of up to approx. 2500 words, or the first 10 pages of a longer or full-length play, along with a brief bio, by email to: scripts@kultursalon.net.
In principle, all subject matter, themes, and styles are welcome. Of particular interest, however, are uncompromising social and political dramas, dark or biting satire, controversial topics, experimental concepts and/or language, and cultural settings or conflicts that may be typically underrepresented on the contemporary Western stage.
Allow up to 2-3 months for response. If your play is selected and you cannot be present in Vienna on the date of the workshop, you'll be invited to participate via video conference. No submission fee. If your play is to be workshopped, you'll be asked to make a small member contribution of EUR 22 (USD 25), which will be used to help offset costs related to script production. Following the meeting, you'll receive a written overview, including summaries of the main points of discussion.
Actors may submit their résumés to shtick@kultursalon.net. While KulturSalon Wien cannot offer cash payment for these events, participating actors will receive a free KulturSalon Wien Associate membership card, which is valid for 6 months from the date of participation and covers all association events, including the weekly series, FilmStory.
Associate members only need to register their attendance in advance here on meetup. Please note that capacity for each meeting may be impacted by the size of the participating ensemble, so that the RSVP feature may be closed at any time.
