Come join us this Saturday for a screening of Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The French film won Best Screenplay at the 2019 Cannes, and was one of the very best reviewed films of the past year (a 98% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Some have argued that it should have been the French entry for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars.
Summary: France, 1760. Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Heloise, a young woman who has just left the convent. Because she is a reluctant bride-to-be, Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing Heloise by day and secretly painting her by firelight at night. As the two women orbit one another, intimacy and attraction grow as they share Heloise's first moments of freedom. Heloise's portrait soon becomes a collaborative act of and testament to their love.

COMMUNITY & DISCUSSION
Let’s celebrate film and learn about filmmaking together.
As openers to discussion, tell us what you really enjoyed about the film. What did you find remarkable, and how did the filmmakers make it so?
Conversely, what might you have done differently if you had been the filmmaker? If something didn’t quite work for you, imagine if you're in the writers room, and pitch an idea for a different approach. If you had some issues with the movie, you should still appreciate that the filmmakers poured their lives into the project.
Let’s be specific in our answers, avoid nonconstructive absolutes, and welcome all ideas (especially if they differ from your own).
