⚡️Dr. Laura Palmer - Solving All Design Everywhere? What Federal Design Changes Mean for UX Practice
In August 2025, the new American By Design initiative announced the establishment of a National Design Studio overseen by a Chief Design Officer to "update the Government's design language to be both usable and beautiful." This talk explores what this could mean for UX beyond federal government and what trickle-down effects designers should expect. Since January, disability rights have eroded with the withdrawal of accessibility support across agencies, including removal of ASL interpretation and White House accessibility guidance. Can we expect the National Design Studio to enhance accessibility, or should UX designers prepare to defend universal design best practices as new federal requirements emerge?
Dr. Laura Palmer is a professor of technical communication at Kennesaw State University. Her works meets at the intersection of tech development and humanities thinking. She brings the ideas from technical communication, UX research, and user-centered practices together to shape new approaches and dialogues. Dr. Palmer's current interests center on digital accessibility and recent developments within the Federal government.
