First off, what does RETRO stand for? It stands for Reliving Eagerly The Remembered Olden-days. That's the 411 on this event series, no duh!
Hmm, so what are the "olden" days? Well it's different for everyone, but since I am hosting and a millenial, it means the best years, aka all that and a bag of chips aka the 90s and early 2000s. So the focus attendee demographic is 25-42 and a bit quirky/silly, nostalgic and/or light-hearted (ideally a mix of all three). Oh snap, that's whassup...
So, what are these events? Simply put, they are a series of events to make us feel younger and forget being adults for at least a couple of hours here and there. There will be lively conversation, abundant laughter, fun and games, and most importantly a small dose from the fountain of youth you can take back with you to your adult lives.
There are some simple rules though:
1. Thou Shall Not Adult:
Leave your mortgages, politics, religion, kids, jobs, stress, sensible shoes et cetera at the door, maybe even your cellphones in your car. Just say no to formal and nah to normal!
2. No Time for Being Serious:
Silliness, goofiness, quirkiness, cornyness and ridiculousness are all highly encouraged. Seriousness is contraband, we hope you'll understand!
3. Adventure Calls:
Be ready for spontaneous jokes, impromptu dares and embracing the unexpected. From grass stains to laughing pains, spontaneity reigns!
4. Embrace Nostalgia:
Fondly (and loudly) reminisce Saturday morning cartoons, Friday night lights, questionable fashion and even sugary cereals. Remember to be kind and rewind!
5. Play Nice (But Play Hard):
Friendly competition is welcome, but remember we're all on the same team: Team Never Grow Up. Support the fun and you've already won!
6. Imagination is Your Only Limit:
Daydreaming, making up stories and believing in slightly improbable things is not just allowed, it's fundamental. Embrace the whimsical, ditch the typical!
7. Sharing is Caring (Especially Snacks):
Whether its food or thoughts, or a food for thought, sharing is welcome here. Because the more you know, the more you grow...
8. Simply Humble:
Consider others considerably by keeping your boasts to a minimum (unless its facetious of course). Remember, it's a drag to brag!
Warning I might break the ice and start yapping about slap bracelets, Razor scooters, rollerblades, slinkies, reliable old flip phones or cherished iPods, the satisfying clack of Pogs being slammed, the chaos of a good old-fashioned game of tag, chatting on AIM and maybe even a fiercely competitive round of Mario Kart 64. I may reminisce about field days, proms and friday night lights. I might bring up how the Bulls dream team is unparalleled or how Lance despite his doping was still pretty dope. I might pop on a playlist or two featuring everyone from Baby Bash to Eve 6 to Usher to Backstreet Boys to Third Eye Blind to Nelly to Fall Out Boy. I might debate the lyrical genius of dial-up internet connection sounds, the humor of American Pie or awesome-ness of the X-men movies, perhaps even attempt a coordinated Macarena without shame. I might wear cargo pants and graphic tees and if somebody gives me beef I suppose I could say "Whatever!" or "Talk to the hand!" at appropriate (and inappropriate) moments.
So consider this your permission slip back to a time when Dunkaroos and Doritos were a balanced snack and the biggest decision was which Nickelodeon show to watch after school. Let's have fun everyone and peace out!
