Lancaster Freethought Society

Hello, we are Lancaster Freethought Society!
We get together to discuss religion, theology, philosophy, art, culture, politics, current events, and anything and everything else of interest to our members!  We strive to keep these discussions at minimum, civil and productive, but hopefully, friendly and engaging and exploratory!

Our group is open to anyone and everyone of any and all racial and ethnic and gender groups, is open to people of any or no religious or political beliefs or affiliation(s), our only ‘mandatory beliefs’ are about:

1) Civil discourse: we want conversations to be open, friendly, and productive, not off-limits, hostile, dishonest.  We welcome all who wish to contribute, by continuing to provide a forum where personal insults and domineering behavior are absent, and reason and evidence and curiosity are respected!

2) Free-thought: all beliefs can be explored, all beliefs may rightfully be examined, appraised, constructively criticized.  One’s own beliefs may need to be explained, tested, defended.  True beliefs ought to be held and false beliefs ought to be discarded, and we want people interested in this as introspection of our own beliefs as well as outward exploration of the beliefs of others.

We have no positions of authority within our group from which to dictate opinions to others.  (I, Wilson, as organizer, exert my authority to plan events and make restaurant reservations!)

Our group has no membership dues, event fees, or tithes!  When dining at a restaurant, we get separate checks, when we do the occasional ‘field trip’ event at a ticketed venue, we would buy separate tickets!

We have frequent events, come to any that appeal to you!  We are not strict about timeliness and understand busy schedules, if you can come to an event ‘late’, let us know and we will do what we can to make sure you can find us and join in!  If you are a new member, we will make introductions and then you are welcomed to participate in the discussion as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable!
