We believe that having access to the healing power of nature is a human right! Unfortunately, outdoor opportunities are too often inaccessible to community members because of the limitations built into the trail or activity’s design.
On May 17th, we’re teaming up with our friends at Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light for a casual, family-friendly outing on Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve’s universally accessible trail.
Welsh Mountain serves as the headwaters for the Pequea and Conestoga Creeks, both of which empty into the Susquehanna River. Its fully forested, half-mile universally accessible trail includes seasonal blooms of wild azaleas, low-bush blueberries, and wildflowers, as well as large flushes of mushrooms. Welsh Mountain provides the vital ecosystem service of stormwater retention, saving communities within the valleys from the possibility of flash-floods.
This event reflects the theme of PA IPL’s 2025 Bike & Hike challenge, “Caring for Every Body: Moving Through Nature.” Participants will have the opportunity to consider the intersection of climate justice and disability justice. How can we build the environments in which we live and recreate in more accessible ways? How can we design our trails to be accessible to every “body” - inclusive of all people, animals, and life-sustaining systems like waterways?
