Overview

Relax with a nature journaling make-and-take—gain practical book-and-art skills and cozy, outdoorsy vibes for nature lovers and journal artists.

Details

December seems like the perfect time to take a break from the outdoors and get crafty, creating items that will help our nature journaling practice in 2026. We have reserved the large Creative Arts Room at Las Cruces Village (the former Good Samaritan) for our Saturday, December 13, activity that begins at 1 p.m. The room is in the Social Center at 3011 Buena Vida Circle.

Please RSVP us @ mesillavalleyaudubon@gmail.com so we'll have enough materials for everyone.

There is a material fee of $15 to participate and you will be able to make (and take home!) the following items (Check the Photo section to see images):

Travel Palette and Decorated Tin with Julia Osgood
Set up a small travel palette with pans to hold your favorite paints, then decorate a tin to hold your miscellaneous nature journaling supplies, like clips, pencil sharpeners, etc.
Watercolor dot card and color wheel with Ellen Jaffe Castello
We will make a 2” x 4” dot card and a 4” x 4” color wheel using the primary colors — red, yellow and blue — in warm and cool versions. We will provide all art supplies and glassine envelopes so you can take these tools nature journaling.
You will also have the opportunity to use the Art Toolkit color wheel template to play with color mixing the primary colors or bring your favorite watercolor paints. It’s fun to experiment with them on the 4” x 4" cards or in your sketchbook.
Accordion journal with Cheryl Fallstead
See how easy it is to create an accordion journal, perfect for a trip to a special destination. We'll make 3" x 3" journals with watercolor paper, but once you know how, you can make them just about any size and with a variety of papers.
Journal with Kay Gross
Kay will guide you in making a larger journal with a special storage pocket inside. You can later decorate the outside cover with your own beautiful watercolor painting.
In addition, Cindy Robbins will offer a brief stewardship presentation to everyone along with a relevant "party favor" you can use while out journaling.
