Lets Hike to Sunset Peak 7.2 Mi 1300 G/L

Details
Sunset Peak is a popular summit south of Baldy and Lookout Mountain. For people in reasonably good shape, virtually no wilderness experience is required, as the summit can be reached by a well-graded fire road (a total distance of 3.5 miles for a round trip of 7). The elevation gain is 1300 feet. Well behaved dogs are welcome. This hike is alsp posted on with our hiking pals at Adventurers Unlimited https://www.meetup.com/Adventurers-Unlimited/events/221410774/

The ascent of Sunset Peak is a particularly rewarding experience in the winter when the air is crisp and clear. From the 5,796-foot summit you get a grandstand vista of the great horseshoe ridge—crowned by massive Mount Baldy—that encircles upper San Antonio Canyon. To the northwest, beyond the deep canyons of the East Fork country, looms the line of peaks above Crystal Lake.
It’s an moderately strenuous stroll up the 3.5-mile fire road to the summit, and well worth the effort. Sunset Peak is also listed on the Sierra Club's One Hundred Peaks List, so you also get credit for bagging a peak. Once we get to the summit, we'll find cement pillars and ruins from the fire lookout tower that was once here.
