San Jacinto Peak (through Tramway)
Details
For those trying to get into high elevation peaks or training for Whitney, this is one of easiest peaks to start with! And it’s one of Southern California 6 peaks challenge and second highest peak in Southern California!
We will meet at Palm Springs Aerial Tramway https://maps.app.goo.gl/WQeYGM4CzhJpCoFv6?g_st=ic at 8:30-8:45 am. And board the Tramway at 9 am sharp.
Few of us have the yearly pass, so if you start with us, you will skip the tramway line and get 10% discount. Otherwise, you won’t be able to start at 9 am unless you purchase the yearly pass.
Once the Tramway reach up, we will be starting our hike at about 8800 feet elevation, and climb 5.5 miles up to 10834 feet. The climb and descent are moderate, but the high elevation can make this hike relatively tough.
Usually, people can feel elevation sickness above 8000 feet and it gets more serious above 10 000 feet! You are the best judge about your symptoms! Please know if you feel any elevation sickness; such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, shortness of breath, very high heart rate, know your limits, speak up and head back! Otherwise, it can get serious.
Staying well hydrated, before and during the hike can help with preventing elevation sickness. Also, hiking fast at high elevation, can stimulate elevation sickness. So we will keep a slow moderate pace 2.0miles/hr up.
Once on the summit, second highest peak in Southern California, you are rewarded with great views in every direction, assuming we get a nice clear day. We will take a break along the summit, enjoy the views, a snack and drinks.
After the hike, for those interested, we will have lunch at the cafeteria up, before we take Tram down or at Peaks restaurant, depending on availability and opening time.
