What we’re about
[This group is a spin-off from the Developer Tea Discord bookclub (https://discord.gg/eUwW2gVM4B). To listen to past episodes, or to find out the latest, visit https://developertea.com/. Please note, that this is only the bookclub part of the Developer Tea experience, and we do not have any special access or influence on the genius that is Jonathan Cutrell.]
Welcome to the technology arm of the Learn -> Contemplate -> Discuss group (for philosophy, please visit (https://meetu.ps/c/504p7/CntjY/a)! If you are someone who wants to expand their understanding of the world of technology including the myriad disciplines required to work in the technology industry, you may have found the perfect resting place. This group has been created with the express idea of being an online venue to exchange thoughts, most often about a book/topic (which will be selected based on its availability in multiple formats, for those that prefer to engage either through listening or reading/watching), but this is somewhat flexible.
If you decide to join, as a member, you will be given plenty of notice to obtain and contemplate the material. Then during the meetup you can put forward your questions, interpretations, and any criticisms of the material for that session.
Please consider participating if you like to explore ideas (yours and other peoples), and are interested to have an open discussion with folks that are also wanting to engage in thinking about concepts from multiple angles.
Note: If you are looking to beat people down with your strong opinions, this is probably not the place for you.
Want to help support the ongoing running costs of the groups, but don't know how? Don't worry, I've got you covered. ;) I've created a low cost monthly recurring payment with Patreon, or feel free to do a one time payment (possibly multiple times) at BuyMeACoffee/Book.
Thank you very much. <3
Looking forward to hearing what you have bouncing around in your brain. :)

See all- Life in Code: A Personal History of Technology by Ellen UllmanLink visible for attendees
Step into the unfolding narrative of technology's journey with our next online conversation about Ellen Ullman's revealing work, Life in Code: A Personal History of Technology (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31450584-life-in-code). For those interested in delving into the personal stories behind the tech revolution, understanding the societal consequences of our digital era, or exploring the hurdles encountered by pioneering women in the technology field, this gathering is set to enlighten and engage.
A collection of essays that span the author's career in the tech industry, offering both a personal and historical perspective on the evolution of computing and the internet. Through the essays the author explores:
-
Personal Journey into Tech: Ullman shares her own path into the technology sector during the 1980s and 1990s, a time when the field was much less welcoming to women. Her narrative includes the challenges and triumphs she faced as one of the few women in a male-dominated industry.
-
Evolution of Technology: The book traces the significant technological shifts over the past few decades, from the rise of personal computing and the internet to the development of software engineering as a discipline. Insights are explored into how these changes impacted both the industry and society at large.
-
Ethical and Social Implications: Ullman delves into the ethical considerations and social implications of technological advancements. She discusses issues such as privacy, surveillance, the digital divide, and the impact of automation on employment.
-
Insider's View of Silicon Valley: Offering an insider's perspective, the author describes the culture of Silicon Valley and how it has evolved. She critiques the valley's ethos, including its focus on rapid growth, its sometimes myopic perspective on the societal impact of technology, and the gender imbalances within tech companies.
-
Reflections on Software Engineering: Consideration on the nature of coding and software development as a seasoned engineer. She explores the creative and intellectual challenges of writing code and the unique mindset required for software engineering.
-
The Human Side of Technology: Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on the human aspects of technology - the people behind the code, the users affected by technological innovations, and the communities shaped by the digital age. Ullman argues for a more humane and ethical approach to technology development.
-
The Future of Technology: While recounting her experiences and observations, the author also speculates on the future directions of technology. She raises questions about artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the potential for technology to both solve and create problems.
This online discussion is perfect for tech professionals, UX/UI designers, digital marketers, and anyone interested in the psychological underpinnings of technology. Don't miss the chance to enhance your understanding of human behaviour and its influence on technology development and use.
Gear up for an evening of thought-provoking dialogue, networking with like-minded individuals, and gaining a new perspective on the intersection of psychology and technology.

This meetup will be based around a presentation of some of the concepts from the book. This will provide a basis for the discussion, but will not limit it. Come along and share your thoughts and opinions!
