More about Riichi Mahjong
Riichi (pronounced like "reach") Mahjong is an exciting game for four players. In some ways it is similar to card games like rummy or poker, but it is played with a set of tiles instead of a deck of cards. This game is very popular in Japan, and is rapidly gaining popularity in the United States. Envision a game that blends the luck of the draw with a strong skill component that makes it suitable for competitive play too. Riichi Mahjong retains the excitement of a game where anything can happen while still emphasizing and rewarding strategy in the long-term. It is a game with a lot of depth and richness, but most of all, it's REALLY FUN!

See all- Learn and Play Riichi Mahjong36 W 36th St., New York, NY$10.00
Join the USPML at Sparrow's Nest Studios for our biweekly "learn and play" meetup! Maybe you've seen people playing mahjong in movies like Crazy Rich Asians, or video games like the Yakuza series or Final Fantasy XIV. Maybe you're already familiar with the game, but are looking to grow your skills. This is your chance to jump in, toss some tiles around, and see what it's all about.
If you're a novice, the first hour or two of the meetup will be our Riichi "Jumpstart" where our teachers will show you the ropes and make sure you're comfortable getting started. If you've only played online or if you're familiar with other styles of mahjong, we can give you a quick rules and etiquette primer that will have you ready to play in no time. This meetup is a beginner-friendly and welcoming environment, and we're always happy to meet new players.
Interested in more structured classes and lectures? Check out USPML's other events - we're always working on growing our selection of formal classes for both beginners and experienced players, as well as unique ways to share the strategy and culture of mahjong. You can follow us on Instagram at @uspml or sign up for our newsletter.
There's a suggested donation of $10 but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. You can reserve your spot on EventBrite or register at the door. Please let us know if you're looking to learn so we can be sure to have a teacher and an arabic-numbered set available for you. Otherwise good luck and have fun!
