🌟 WHY PRAIRIE AVENUE?
In the late 19th century, Prairie Avenue was the most prestigious address in Chicago — the city's original "Millionaire's Row." After the Great Fire of 1871, the city's elite fled downtown to build grand mansions along this quiet, tree-lined boulevard just south of the city center, offering clean air, proximity to Lake Park (later Grant Park), and easy access to downtown via Michigan Avenue and the Illinois Central Railroad.

Between 18th and 22nd Streets, Prairie Avenue became home to industrial titans like George Pullman, Marshall Field, Philip Armour, and John Glessner. Their architects — Henry Hobson Richardson, Solon Beman, and Cobb & Frost — created some of the most magnificent Gilded Age residences in the Midwest.

By the early 1900s, heavy industry moved nearby and families relocated to the Gold Coast and suburbs. Many mansions were lost, but a few survived — giving rise to today's Prairie Avenue Historic District, one of Chicago's best-preserved glimpses into its Gilded Age wealth, architecture, and ambition. 🏛️

🌟 WHY LINCOLN SQUARE?
Lincoln Square's story is one of Chicago's most compelling immigration tales. Beginning in the late 19th century, German immigrants transformed this North Side neighborhood into a thriving cultural enclave — complete with breweries, butcher shops, apothecaries, and social clubs that made it feel like a transplanted corner of the Old World.

The neighborhood's German roots run deep — from the legendary Merz Apothecary, one of the oldest continuously operating pharmacies in Chicago, to Gene's Sausage Shop, to the DANK Haus German American Cultural Center, which keeps the community's cultural heritage alive today.

But Lincoln Square has always been more than just German Chicago. Over the decades it welcomed new waves of immigrants and artists, reinventing itself while honoring its roots. Table space is completely free! Food and BYOB friendly. Many food options are available near the area + down the street by Milwaukee and North. We also have snacks and bottled/canned drinks available.

Division Blue Line and CTA Bus 56 stop in front of the shop.

For those driving, the street across from the shop is free parking, otherwise the side streets closer to Ashland/Milwaukee/Division intersection have some permit-less parking available in the residential area + north of the intersection has more free options. Elsewhere, there is meter parking on the street.
