Exciting wine tasting - The Great Wines of Southern Italy - Tastes of 6 wines for $12.86/person
Monday, June 10, 5:45 PM - The Hills Market of Worthington Hills, 7860 Olentangy River Road, 43235
This tasting is sponsored by the wine club Let’s Discover Wine. DO NOT TRY TO SIGNUP ON MEETUP!
We will learn about the major wines of Southern Italy, many of which are unknown to most American wine lovers. Did you know that three of the absolute top wines in Italy come from Campania, around Naples! We will taste those 3 renowned wines, plus 3 others from Southern Italy.
- Taurasi DOCG, “the Barolo of Southern Italy”, is one of the best red wines in the world. Made with 60- to 100-year-old vines, it is aged at least 12 months in French oak.
- Campania in Southern Italy also produces two of the four best white wines of Italy: Greco di Tufo GOCG and Fiano di Avellino DOCG.
WHY IS THIS SUCH A BARGAIN? You only pay the exact cost of the wine and expenses: no profit, no labor expense. Just sharing the costs equally.
EDUCATIONAL: Everyone receives an educational packet of information, including detailed descriptions of the 6 wines that we are tasting, plus informational printouts from the Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS): CMS Tasting Grid, CMS temperatures for serving wine, CMS Color Scale for Wine, and the CMS Deductive Tasting Language Chart.
DIRECT COMPARISON OF SIMILAR WINES. It takes direct comparison of similar wines for each of us to learn what we like the best. It is hard to compare a wine you are tasting today with one you tasted a month ago. You may remember that you liked both of them, but which one do you prefer?
- We will directly compare the two renowned white wines of southern Italy: Fiona vs Greco - using even the same producer.
- Fiona and Greco will match off against Sicily’s Grillo.
- We will see if we like the more expensive celebrated Taurasi more than a simpler Aglianico.
- All in all, we will learn five grapes that are not well distributed in the US wine circles, but are very important in Italian wine.
- There is a very special aspect of this tasting: Four of the wines are from the same producer, giving us a perfect comparison of the wines from the area, without being confused by different producers.
WINES IN THIS TASTING: Jan Wilson, the expert Director of Wine at The Hills, curated the selection of producers for this tasting, but she will not be presenting the wine. This is a “Let’s Discover Wine” tasting - not a Hills’ event. Contact for any questions or information: letsdiscoverwine@gmail.com.
