How about a visit to Folly's Farm Donkey Sanctuary? Staffed by volunteers, this amazing farm rescues and cares for more than 20 very charming and gentle donkeys - they are usually stabled during visiting times, but they are always up for a gentle stroke on the nose!
Admission is free but they always appreciate a donation. There is also a small gift shop.
The place isn't that large so we can get around it in 45 minutes or so. Hemel Hempstead Garden Centre is close by and has a pretty good cafe, so we can have lunch there.
