In October we're discussing the appropriately spooky novella Muñeca, by Cynthia Gómez. We'll meet on Halloween Day, October 31st. Come dressed-up as your favorite author or fictional character (if you're so inspired) to celebrate the day with this vivid story! Muñeca is a captivating gothic tale about a queer Latina witch who sets out to rescue an enchanted heiress. It is 1968 Oakland, and Natalia Fuentes hears rumors about the beautiful Violeta Miramontes, a young heiress left paralyzed by a mysterious illness. Nati knows a thing or two about witchcraft, and she believes that dark magic is at play. Certain that she can break the spell and earn a handsome reward, she works her way into the house as Violeta’s caretaker and immediately discovers her suspicions are true. As she searches for the answers to who cursed Violeta and why, feelings between the two women bloom into romance. This seductive novella is 176 pages. Author Cynthia Gómez earned praise for her story's powerful fusion of horror, romance and social commentary. NPR described it as "at once romantic and frightening" and named it one of the ten best books this year. Muñeca is available in audio format as well as digital and print, in local libraries and online. Since it is new and popular, comment here if you'd like to share your copy.
