Under One Sun: An Eclipse Gathering
Details
THE MEETING POINT IS CHANGED: it is now JARDIM to BELEM
Note: Please be aware that this event will invite you not to stare at the sun for most of the eclipse but rather look around and inside. If it is important for you to track the movement of the moon over the sun wearing glasses, this event may disappoint you.
PLEASE JOIN THIS WHATSAPP GROUP (right now so you don't forget :-)) to keep in touch during the day: https://chat.whatsapp.com/KvDVCBM6sDLBxSpktHxfop. We are so many that we will not be able to wait for people arriving late etc. In this group, the exact location of the group will be posted throughout the whole evening.
For millions of years, human beings have gathered in quiet awe to witness the rare moment when the moon passes before the sun. In our fast-paced modern world, it is easy to forget that everything we are—and everything we build—is sustained by the warmth and energy of the sun.
An eclipse is a profound pause button. It is a striking reminder of our shared, humble place within the vast cosmic order, and of how much we need one another.
We are coming together on the banks of the Tagus not just to look up, but to attune both inward and outward to the profound reverberation that the disappearance of the light in full day creates within us and around us.
What to Expect:
- Attunement & Presence: Beyond watching the solar disk itself, we will hold space to notice the subtle shift in light, the change in temperature, the quiet in the air (relative to being in the middle of a capital city!), and the internal emotional reverberations of the moment.
- Community & Connection: A warm, open atmosphere to sit side-by-side, sharing a collective silence and a collective presence as the shadow moves across us.
- Reflective Pause and Walk along the River: A brief moment after the peak. We will walk still in under a darkened sun along the river until the pier of The Centre of the Unknown, where we will watch the return of the light and the sunset
Bring a cushion or blanket to sit on, comfortable clothing, and an open heart.
> ⚠️ CRUCIAL EYE SAFETY WARNING ⚠️
>
> Please read carefully before attending: Direct viewing of any solar eclipse—even during partial phases—can cause permanent eye damage or blindness.
>
> * Standard sunglasses, camera lenses, or dark film will NOT protect your eyes.
> * You must use certified solar viewing glasses (ISO 12312-2 compliant) or indirect viewing methods (such as a pinhole projector) to look directly toward the sun.
> * Free glasses are offered here: https://clubdavisao.pt/campanha/eclipse2026. I could not find any though, Ana and I bought on Amazon.es.
> * Don't get too obsessed with watching the disk! The real experience is better lived with wide awareness, rather than focusing on an isolated image in the sky behind a black piece of plastic. We encourage participants to focus equally on the ambient environmental shifts around us—the changing light, shadows, and temperature—which can be fully experienced without looking at the sun directly. (however get a pair of glasses so you have both options :-) )
