What we’re about
Here we meet and read our favorite texts aloud to each other.
There are a few attendee expectations:
- Choose and bring a short piece of writing you love and are excited about sharing. It should be able to read in 3 to 5 minutes.
- There are no limitations on form; fiction, non-fiction, poetry, a pamphlet, the phonebook, love letter; you choose
- Briefly introduce your text; why you love it; when/how you found it, who wrote it, what it's about.
- Read it aloud for the group
The Basic Agenda
- Dinner is served and there's time for eating and socializing
- Each attendee reads their piece aloud in turn
- After each reading, the group comments and discusses for a bit
- More talk after everyone has read as attendees wish to
What's this all about? Well, we hope to raise up the value and experience of verbal sound, rhythms, and flow. Oral traditions died long ago, but they did make for sensual, strongly felt, often ritual participation in the words spoken and the stories that were told. We're just trying to touch on a bit of that, as well as some other pleasures around speaking words.
And let's not forget the pleasures of a communal table. A tasty meal (usually pasta) and wine are always provided. BYOB is welcome as well, but pot luck offerings are gently discouraged. We promise you'll love the food.
Meetings usually last 1.5 to 2 hours. Swells of enthusiasm (and post meal adult libations) can make them longer now and then.
