In this novella, set during the reign of Catherine the Great, a young man embarking on his new career in the army performs an act of kindness that sets in motion a chain of life-changing events. It is described as a masterclass in storytelling and a founding text of the 19th-century Russian novel; high art at its most effortless; a singularly Russian work of the imagination; a timeless, universal story.

Edith Wharton’s masterpiece lays bare the perils of a young socialite of limited means navigating the glittering world of New York's high society in the Gilded Age.
A flawed character who often makes bad decisions, she struggles to maintain her precarious position. She questions whether she wants that life or can break free and embrace a life of independence but fears living in social oblivion and poverty.
A beautifully written story of a woman's pursuit of financial security, respect, and happiness and the difficulty of trying to have it all still resonates today.
The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton is available in all formats at public libraries and bookstores. (236 pp)
