Gunung Besar Hantu (1,462m) is the highest mountain in the state of Negeri Sembilan (known for Datuk), part of Kenaboi park and makes an interesting and proper full day-hike in Msia. It is not commonly used as a hiking location and is home to waterfalls, jungle trails and has quite a rugged and unspoiled rainforest. In fact it is on the border of Negeri Sembilan and Pahang, and it is closer to Kuala Lumpur (KL) than Tampin.

Malaysia hikers usually compare hiking Gunung Besar Hantu with that of Gunung Nuang via Pangsun in Selangor, however it is definitely easier than Gunung Nuang. In fact, you can use this as a step up before heading to Gunung Nuang.

Gunung Besar Hantu for most part is a gradual climb and isn't technically very difficult. It involves going through a long road at the start, where we will take a 4WD instead of walking. The hike offers a variety of beautiful flora and fauna, and maybe some mossy forest, as well as decent views from the peak (good weather permitting), perhaps even spotting Genting Highlands in the distance.

Who is this for?
=> People who wish to challenge themselves with a full day hike
=> Have done Ophir before and wish to do a full-day hike that is similar
=> Explore a more raw rainforest hike with a variety of terrain
=> Step up after doing training hikes like Belumut and Angsi, with some view
=> A decent full day Malaysia hike above 1,400m that isn't very difficult while not travelling too far

It serves as a good training or progressive hike for those who wish to do more hiking, while in an interesting terrain and of a certain height. This acts as good training for other treks, like Kinabalu, or Nepal. Do note that we are looking to descend by around 6pm!

How tough is it/What should I expect?

It is similar to doing Mount Ophir (Sagil), except that the terrain is much more raw and can be a muddy hike. It is less challenging than Asahan trail. I would say in between Belumut and Ophir Asahan. The trek is around 4-5up and 4-5h down, making it a total of 8h- 10h, depending on your speed. The total distance is ~20km in total.

It is generally tropical rain forest trail, with some small stream crossings. It starts off as a gradual incline and gets steeper closer to the summit, and the path can be narrow most of the time.

There are 3 junctions and it is important to not turn in the wrong direction and get lost! Therefore, we will keep the groups close, and there is also a cut-off timing which we'll enforce more strictly compared to our hikes. If you fail to make it, you will have to turn back unfortunately as we aim to descend latest by 6pm.
