What we’re about
What we do as improvisers ought to be deliberate and intentional. And we should notice everything that is happening in the emotional dynamic created with our scene partner. As such, all improv is mindful improv. In our meetups and classes you will learn how "Yes, And" and other so-called "rules" of improv are limitations. Instead, we focus on the point of view and emotional dynamic created between two characters and the actors that portray them.
Our meetups are workshops that begin with some warmup exercises to engage your body, speech and mind, progressing to exercises that connect to point-of-view and emotional dynamic. Then we'll do scenes -- two person, three person, or even more. Note that what we are doing is called "long form" improv. We're doing scenes that are both dramatic and comedic, rather than "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" type games.
All improv is a mindfulness practice. It involves being in the "now," being in connection to your scene partner, challenging your comfort zone, relinquishing your ego, and developing the confidence to just jump in. It also means being attentive to subtleties, and being intentional rather than random.
You don't need any experience in improv, acting, or any mindfulness practices. You don't have to be fast, clever, or funny. You just need to be curious and just show up! As you continue on the improv path, you may discover how it extends into your everyday life. You may become more confident, more aware, more playful, and more willing to say "yes" to your experience. After all, all of life is unscripted. It's all improv!
Please note that attendance is restricted to the people who RSVP'ed and is restricted to eight attendees. If you RSVP "yes," you have committed to attending the meetup. If you later discover that you cannot attend the meetup, please change your RSVP to "not attending" so that people on the wait list will be able to attend.
We especially encourage those who are a bit shy, and who have no experience in either improv or scripted theater. Come learn a fun and very useful extension to your current mindfulness or theater practice, and meet like-minded new friends! And it's a lot of fun!
This improv meetup is for adults only.
