Videos and discussion: A narrated journey through global music

Legendary music producer, author, and raconteur Joe Boyd has assembled a collection of rarely seen clips of musicians from around the world, to illustrate how jazz, rhythm & blues and rock ’n’ roll would never have happened if it weren’t for the melodies and rhythms emanating from over the horizon. The presentation will draw on material from his most recent book, And the Roots of Rhythm Remain, which Meetup members heard him discuss at a Berkeley bookstore some months ago. In a recent interview with Afropop Worldwide, Boyd described the "operating principle" behind the book as: What's the music that everybody [in the Western world] knows, but they don't know where it comes from, or the stories behind it?

COST: The cost of your movie ticket (about $13 to $17, online or in person). Buy your own tickets. I also ask that attendees consider donating $1.00 to offset the hefty fees that Meetup charges me each year.

TRANSIT: The Roxie is located about one block from the 16th Street BART station and Mission Street Muni bus lines (and is on the route of the #22 Muni bus line). If driving, allow extra time to find parking on side streets.
