Overview

Experience a bold fusion of Indian Carnatic rhythms with jazz improvisation—perfect for open-minded listeners craving adventurous live music.

Details

Local trio VidyA combines Indian classical music and jazz in a style described in one review as "madly percussive and sparkling with…a saxophone that switches idioms from second to second, and a warm, quickly picked string bass. The result combines jazz’s sweet dreaminess with the Indian form’s insistent rhythmic and tonal changes…"

The trio (whom Meetup members have seen perform together over the years at the Red Poppy and the Presidio Officers' Club) consists of Prasant Radhakrishnan on tenor sax, David Ewell on bass, and Sameer Gupta on drums. We've also enjoyed seeing individual members of VidyA perform in several other bands over the decades.

Coincidentally, this makes TWO back-to-back Meetup events (Friday and Saturday) that blend jazz with Indian music - but the two shows should be very different from each other, given that they consist of totally different instruments and two different sets of musicians appearing over the course of the two nights.

SHOW COST: Suggested list price of $30 per person. Buy your own tickets online at the following link:
https://luma.com/vidya-ysc

Seating is general admission, presumably on folding chairs.

The location is a pop-up venue in San Francisco's Mission District.

WHEN/WHERE TO MEET: Unless joining me for dinner beforehand, meet by 7:30 p.m.. at the performance venue, when the doors are due to open. (The concert starts at 8:00 p.m. and goes to 9:30 p.m.)

HOW TO FIND ME: I'm WF, 5 feet tall, with short, salt-and-pepper hair and glasses. I'll send my cellphone number to RSVPers prior to the event. PLEASE TEXT ME IF YOU DON'T SPOT ME.

OPTIONAL PRE-SHOW DINNER at 6:30 p.m. at Aditi, a nearby Indian restaurant. When you RSVP for the Meetup event, indicate if you're interested in the dinner as space allows. (I typically limit pre-show dinners to six Meetup members who don't have a history of flaking out on their RSVPs.)

TRANSIT/PARKING: Conveniently located just 3 blocks from the 24th Street BART station, and within a few blocks of Muni bus lines. Parking is presumably on the street. (If you're driving, allow extra time to find parking!)
