We haven't had an "In Search of..." hike in a long time. The standard Towsley hike is a moderate-to-slightly strenuous 6.5 mile loop hike through an astonishing variety of habitat types. But we won't be doing the standard hike today (surprised?). Instead we'll be going off-trail to explore Towsely's history of oil development.

I have a map and historical photos of oil rigs that were in operation sometime last century. We'll search for these sites and oil well artifacts as we follow long forgotten and overgrown oil roads. We'll also seek out the location of the old Haws house -- the home of the last family that lived in Towsley Canyon. We'll climb an old oil road into Temple Canyon and if there is enough time search for artifacts in Wiley Canyon.

Three of our destinations

This is oil well Limbocker 1 from 1941. The Charles Oliver Haws, Sr. house is in the upper right of the picture. Haws Jr's house is off the picture about center right.

RSVP and mark your calendars today. I'll be adding more details and some historical imagery as the days go by so check back often. Towsley veterans certainly won't want to miss this one. No beginners. No dogs.

Directions: Take the Calgrove exit from the Golden State Freeway (Interstate 5). Turn west and take The Old Road south for about 100 yards, turn right into gate. Park in first lot on right.

Post Hike Lunch will be at Chuy's!
