This will be our fourth hike in the 1,400-acre Palos Verdes Nature Preserve. With 30 miles of hiking trails and an active landslide there is always something new and different to explore. The preserve is made up of 10 reserves and we'll be hiking in two of them: The Forrestal Reserve and the Portuguese Bend Reserve.

Our hike will start in Forrestal Nature Reserve at a former basalt quarry with trails that wind around the top of the quarry bowl. This reserve contains some of the best remaining coastal sage scrub habitat on the Peninsula with splendid spring wildflowers. Dramatic cliffs are characterized by faults, folds, sedimentary bedding and igneous intrusions with many crystals and fossils, and provides tons of ocean views. (Note: Fossil collection is not permitted)

We'll leave the Forrestal Nature Reserve and enter The Portuguese Bend Reserve consisting of rolling hills, five distinct steep canyons and rock outcrops, with coastal sage scrub habitat, a community of intensely fragrant and drought resistant shrubs and flowering plants. Highlights include areas known as Lemonadeberry Parcel, Eagle's Nest, the Badlands, an active landslide and dirt extension of Crenshaw Boulevard. Unique features include a pillow lava outcrop called Ailor Cliff.

By popular demand, dogs will be permitted

Hike will be 8.0 mile loop with close to 1,500 feet total ascent.
