Talk Details:

“Beyond Namespaces: Virtual Clusters are the Future of Multi-Tenancy” - Lukas & Fabian

Talk Abstract: Multi-tenancy is a hot topic in the Kubernetes community. A lot of operators have started to think about lowering costs and consolidating workloads in large, multi-tenant clusters rather than creating 1000s of micro-managed, small clusters. Namespaces are a great way to separate tenants in shared clusters. But what if tenants need to install their own CRDs, run workloads across multiple namespaces or even require different versions of the Kubernetes API server? Virtual clusters are an exciting new approach that extends namespace-based multi-tenancy to address such advanced use cases. At its core, virtual clusters provision isolated Kubernetes control planes for each tenant (i.e. separate Kube API server, data store (etcd), controller manager etc). This talk will explain how virtual clusters work, show what implementations are available today, and demonstrate fascinating, real-world use cases for virtual clusters.

“One, Two, Green & Blue; See The Ways Vcluster Can Work For You” - Mike

Talk Abstract: What if each developer or team could independently provision and run their own Kubernetes clusters with full api access? Learn how to leverage vcluster and the cluster-api to build dynamic and full-access environments. Then see how these independent environments can be stitched together to create a unified view for QE, integration testing or demos. All while managing each environment's costs and compliance from a single view on the host cluster.

About Speakers:

Lukas Gentele, CEO & Co-Founder at Loft Labs

Lukas Gentele is the CEO of Loft Labs, Inc., a startup that builds open-source developer tooling for Kubernetes and helps companies with their transition from traditional to cloud-native software development. Before moving to San Francisco to start Loft Labs, Lukas founded a Kubernetes-focused consulting company in his home country Germany. He has previously spoken at conferences such as KubeCon, ContainerConf and Continuous Lifecycle, writes articles for journals such as heise and Better Programming, and likes to share his experiences at meetups.

Fabian Kramm, CTO & Co-Founder at Loft Labs

Fabian Kramm is co-founder of Loft Labs Inc. and has been active in the Kubernetes environment for several years. He is the initiator and core contributor of several popular open-source projects in the Kubernetes area, such as vcluster, DevSpace or jsPolicy. Besides his employment at Loft Labs Inc., he also participates in other open-source projects, such as Kubernetes and Docker.

Mike Tougeron, Lead Cloud Engineer at Adobe

For several years Mike has been building Kubernetes platforms and deployments. With a passion for automation and developer engagement, Mike works towards continuously improving development pipelines to take the complication out of managing services on large-scale infrastructure backed by both VM and containers across multi-cloud environments. Mike is a lazy programmer who would rather write thousands of lines of code for automation instead of running repetitive commands every day. When not coding or playing with his son, you’ll find Mike with his nose buried in a book or playing Civilization.

Lian Li, Developer Advocate at Loft Labs

After a failed attempt at becoming a lawyer, she decided to do something with computers instead. Working as a Fullstack Software Engineer, she got into attending tech events and giving talks on Machine Learning. During this time, she fell in love with the tech community and discovered her passion for building community and providing a safe and productive environment for all, which led to her co-organising the community conference ServerlessDays Amsterdam. Lian lives in Amsterdam and works as a Developer Advocate at Loft Labs, trying to make developing on Kubernetes easy and fun.
