Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Hike (Front Country)
Rating: 1A2 (6.5 miles, 120 feet)
Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, https://www.fws.gov/refuge/don-edwards-san-francisco-bay/visit-us/locations/don-edwards-san-francisco-bay-national-wildlife-refuge ,is the first urban National Wildlife Refuge established in the United States. The Refuge spans 30,000 acres of open bay, salt pond, salt marsh, mudflat, upland and vernal pool habitats located throughout south San Francisco Bay. We'll do a 6.5-mile flat hike on the Newark Slough trail at a leisurely pace. Bring a lunch, plenty of water, warm layers, shoes/boots you are willing to get muddy, and sun protection. Meet at 10:30 a.m. at the visitor’s center parking lot. From Highway 84 (at the east end of the Dumbarton Bridge), exit Thornton Avenue. Travel south on Thornton Avenue for 0.8 miles to the Refuge entrance on the right. Turn right into the Refuge and follow signs to the parking lot. See Google Map.
Rain cancels the hike. Note: Pets are not allowed on the Newark Slough trail so please leave them at home.
