Variety (1983)

Details
Bette Gordon made Variety on an $80,000 budget but she had some help from the downtown New York it depicts. Kathy Acker wrote the script, future 90's cult director Tom DiCillo was on cinematography and Will Patton, Luiz Guzman and photographer Nan Goldin were all part of the cast (and some scenes take place at the woman-owned bar Goldin worked in at the time).
As for the film itself, it follows a woman called Christine who begins selling tickets at a Times Square porn theatre only to find it awakens her sexuality, and before long she's graduated to stalking. It's been compared to Hitchcock for its themes of vouyerism but I think it looks more interesting for its feminist depiction of the early 80's part of NY where art and sleaze met.
