Clojure Engineering @ Funding Circle

Funding Circle are hosting their very first in person Clojure meet-up on Wednesday 12th October, from 6PM! We will be hearing from two of our FC engineers + our external speaker from Confluent.

Evening's schedule:

6:00PM - Networking // Food // Drink

7:00PM - Credit Strategy: Rules and Tactics with Hassan Akhtar (Senior Engineer @ FC) - You don't need to get something out of the box, you just need a good toolbox.

7:30PM - Clorth: a Forth in Clojure with Renzo Borgatti (Principal Engineer @ JUXT) - Forth is a stack-oriented programming language with almost no grammar. It builds complexity bottom-up from a set of definitions called "words" and this minimalism has found niche applications in many embedded systems. Forth is also the perfect environment to learn how to implement your own domain specific language: we'll see why Clojure makes this such an enjoyable experience.

8:00PM - Custom Static Analysis for Clojure with Yuri Silveira (Software Engineer @ FC) - Using a dynamic language with many facilities to express code in different forms is full of trade-offs. On a big project as ours, that relies heavily on macros and DSLs, code can become unwieldy at times. Having code standards and good practices can help, but then it becomes a human task to check on reviews. Clojure code being basically a bunch of data structures, we can build compile-time validations. Maybe use the full power of lisp and use macros to wrap around certain calls to be verified! Please don't do this. Use clj-kondo for static analysis instead, it may be easier than you might expect, and we will give some guidance and examples on how to!
