Details

We will be heading to well-known financial services company, Macquarie Bank, for our latest instalment of London DevOps. We have two fantastic talks lined up so we're excited to welcome you!

RSVPs have filled up quickly in the last few meetups, so make sure you sign up as soon as you can. Fortunately, we have more capacity for this meetup, so we are pleased we can accommodate more of you. Nonetheless, we expect a full venue, so get the date in your diaries and make sure you're RSVP'd!

Agenda:

6:00pm - Arrival

6:45pm - Introductions (Matt Saunders)

7:00pm - The Talks

What is this OpenTelemetry thing? - Martin Thwaites, Principal Developer Advocate at Honeycomb.io

OpenTelemetry is the second most popular project from the CNCF, after Kubernetes, but what is it?
In this talk, we'll cover where OpenTelemetry comes from, what problem it's solving, and then into the components that make up OpenTelemetry (from the protocol to the SDKs). You'll come away from this talk knowing when it's useful to use OpenTelemetry, what words to use when you're talking about it, and also a picture of what value it adds.

Martin Thwaites is a Developer Advocate at Honeycomb, o11y enthusiast, and a delivery-focused Developer from the UK. With over 20 years experience in development in the .NET ecosystem, he’s worked with many companies on scaling up engineering teams and products. The past few years have been spent working on solving complex problems with some of the UK’s big names, including e-commerce retailers and credit lenders.

The History of DevOps - Jamie Dobson, Co-Founder of Container Solutions

Prepare for an entertaining jaunt through the past as Jamie discusses the history of DevOps in the last few industrial revolutions, from the Luddites and their dark satanic mills, through the railway age, ending at the computing needs of a bookseller precipitating the DevOps paradigm we know and love. The lessons from these eras are as relevant now as they were then, whether a company is starting up, scaling up or, in the case of the banks in the City of London, speeding up.

Jamie Dobson is Co-Founder of Container Solutions, a professional services consultancy specialising in cloud migration. A first encounter with a BBC computer and BASIC at the age of nine launched a lifelong passion for programming and software development. He eventually developed a matching passion for coaching and organisational strategy to help humans work effectively and beneficially with the technology that increasingly drives our lives.

9:00pm - Pub (TBC)
Once the meetup is finished, we will head to a nearby pub for drinks and networking.
