Level 42 @ Eventim Apollo/Hammersmith - A Jazz-Funk Happening Supreme...
Details
Hello All, after a long hiatus away from LJM and as an organizer ("long distance"-Oxford and Lake Geneva), this jazzhead (and several more avenues of proper music) is back and pleased to propose the following to this membership.
Founded in the early 1980s, all four original members from the Isle of Wight, Level 42 quickly rose through the ranks as a band that delivered the goods....Mark King (elec bass/lead vox), Mike Lindup (elec keys, vox), Phil Gould (kit), and his brother Boon Gould (elec ax, vox, ..*RIP*....)....Phil left the band for mental health reasons after their first albums ...to be replaced by Gary Husband, jazz multi-instrumentalist extraordinary (drummer for Alan Holdsworth for many years and part of the amazing "IOU" album...and seen at some of our LJM gigs as an enthused gig witness).
Fast forward to 2023 and Mark and Mike are still on point, with a tighter than tight squad... including a punchy horn section that also can belt out the vocal backup chords. Mark's brother Nathan joins as elec guitarist/vox (normally an elec bass player)... with an "unleashed" drummer Pete Ray Biggin owning the kit.
Jazz-Funk is what Level 42 are for the most part (if one has to bullet point/pigeon hole them...:)), but their ballads are tear jerkers/pass the Klennex tissues.. for sure. Here is one of their deep ballads..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUC4o8ZN8FM
Throwing this offering out as I am sure some of you deep jazzers like me appreciate a band that grooves to the maximum, and a group that gets deep "into the pocket"....and Level 42 are just that....and so representative of the 1980s and 1990s music scene....
Please check them out last year on Tour....here at Rockpalast.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou_kVmBS2AY
I have purchased a "STANDING Tix" in the Stalls in front of the stage. Using Viagogo tix vendor. Everyone is free to choose their ticket type. Tix available by various vendors on-line..... I am making RSVP cut off time for this meetup 2 weeks before the gig- cut off on 21 Oct '23...In order to get the next paragraph in order.....
We'll meetup before the gig at a riverside pub near Hammersmith Bridge...or somewhere closer to the venue... Details later to the exact where and when....once I get a better handle on participant numbers and desires....could include having dinner before the gig? Please let me know after the next paragraph...
***Please respond yes only when you have your tix.*** This so I can manage things and make sure things are in good order for all concerned...
It promises to be an amazing gig....I have seen clips from Poland with this 2023 tour and its going to be a major "get-down" jam..So much so I will see them a week before here in Oxford....
In music and the good gig
Russell
