About

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It is open to visitors throughout the year.

Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has since been the home of 40 monarchs.

William the Conqueror chose the site for Windsor Castle, high above the river Thames. Queen Victoria spent most of her years at Windsor.
The fire at Windsor Castle in 1992 destroyed many rooms at the Castle. The award-winning restoration took 5 years to complete.

Windsor Castle has welcomed visitors for hundreds of years.

We suggest you allow 1½ to 2 hours for your visit. The Castle is at the top of a steep hill and the visitor route covers long distances. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes.

From March 2023 onwards, as you approach the Castle, please be aware of works to improve pedestrian safety on Castle Hill. The area may be busier than usual but our Visitor Services team will endeavour to get you admitted as soon as possible.

Your ticket includes a complimentary multimedia guide, available in English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Spanish. The English-lanugage guides feature versions tailored for families (children) and D/deaf and hard of hearing visitors.

When you arrive, you will pass through an airport-style security check. Read more about security & luggage.

You can take photographs outside the Castle buildings, but not inside the Castle or within St George's Chapel. Read about photography, filming & mobile phones.

The undercroft café in the Castle serves food and drinks, however eating and drinking are not permitted inside the State Apartments or St George's Chapel.

GETTING THERE:

By Train:
The fastest way to travel to Windsor Castle from London is to take the train from London Paddington Station to Windsor Central Station. Paddington Station is serviced by the Circle, Bakerloo, District and Hammersmith & City underground lines, making it very accessible from any Central London location. There are normally between 2-3 trains per hour, and the journey takes around 30 minutes with a very easy change of train at Slough Station. Windsor Central Station is located just below the Castle walls.
There is also a direct South West Train from London Waterloo Station to Windsor Castle. The journey time is a little longer and takes about 55 minutes, but the train is direct and goes to Windsor and Eton Riverside Station. Riverside station is a 5 minutes walk from Windsor Castle but bear in mind that this involves a very steep climb up a hill.

By Car
Castle Pay and Display Car Park: Thames Avenue, Windsor, SL4 1QT. Please check just in case there are any changes on the day.
