- East London Film Club 073 / Cloud AtlasThe Star of the East, London
Cloud Atlas is a 2012 epic science fiction film written and directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. Based on the 2004 novel by David Mitchell, it has multiple plots occurring during six eras in time. Cast members perform multiple roles in these time periods. It was produced with a budget between US$100 million and US$146.7 million provided by independent sources, making it one of the most expensive independent films ever produced. Critics were polarized, causing it to be included on various "Best Film" and "Worst Film" lists.
The East London Film Club is like a book club for films. Make sure you watch the film before you attend and then come and join in with the conversation. Please note we will not be showing the film at the meeting.

- Philosophy in the Park 090Burdett-Coutts Drinking Fountain, London
Philosophy in the Park is a philosophical discussion group. Open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary.
We will meet at the Baroness Burdett Coutts Drinking Fountain in Victoria Park (East Park). It is marked down as "13" on the official maps found in the park.
Here's how it works:
- At the start of each hour vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like. The questions with the most votes are the questions we discuss.
- We then break up into groups and each group does a different question. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and up end talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer you're welcome to sit back and enjoy the conversation.
After an hour we all come back together, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So in 3 hours we go around 3 times.
The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something?
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
- Keep it Philosophical
(No Science, no History, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc). - Think for Yourself
(No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read). - Tangents are Cool
(Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question). - Keep it Succinct
(Like this). - Be Excellent to Each Other
(But of course).
Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas.
To terms of the right attitude: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding.
No homework or prior knowledge or reading is necessary - simply come and enjoy the discussions.
After the event finishes you are welcome to stay for more chat and drinks.
If you would like to submit a question please join the Whatsapp group. Question submissions take place on the Thursday before the meeting.
We hope to see you there.
Nice one.

- East London Film Club 074 / Natural Born KillersThe Star of the East, London
Natural Born Killers is a 1994 American romantic crime action film directed by Oliver Stone and starring Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis, Robert Downey Jr., Tommy Lee Jones, and Tom Sizemore. The film tells the story of two victims of traumatic childhoods who become lovers and mass murderers, and are irresponsibly glorified by the mass media. The film is based on an original screenplay by Quentin Tarantino that was heavily revised by Stone, writer David Veloz, and associate producer Richard Rutowski. Tarantino received a story credit though he subsequently disowned the film. It was a box office success, grossing $110 million against a production budget of $34 million, but received polarized reviews. Some critics praised the plot, acting, humor, and combination of action and romance, while others found the film overly violent and graphic. Notorious for its violent content and inspiring "copycat" crimes, the film was named the eighth most controversial film in history by Entertainment Weekly in 2006.

- Brain Worms 086 / Cloud Atlas by David MitchellThe Star of the East, London
A postmodern visionary who is also a master of styles of genres, David Mitchell combines flat-out adventure, a Nabokovian lore of puzzles, a keen eye for character, and a taste for mind-bending philosophical and scientific speculation in the tradition of Umberto Eco, Haruki Murakami, and Philip K. Dick. The result is brilliantly original fiction as profund as it is playful. Now in his new novel, David Mitchell explores with daring artistry fundamental questions of reality and identity. As wild as a videogame, as mysterious as a Zen koan, Cloud Atlas is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon.

- East London Film Club 075 / Jurassic ParkThe Star of the East, London
Jurassic Park is a 1993 American science fiction action film[4] directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Gerald R. Molen, and starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough. It is the first installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, and the first film in the original Jurassic Park trilogy, and is based on Michael Crichton's 1990 novel of the same name, with a screenplay by Crichton and David Koepp. The film is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, off Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica, where a wealthy businessman John Hammond (Attenborough), and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park's power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors, including Hammond's grandchildren, struggle to survive and escape the now perilous island.

- Brain Worms 087 / The Third Policeman by Flann O'BrienThe Star of the East, London

Told by a narrator who has committed a botched robbery and brutal murder, the novel follows him and his adventures in a two-dimensional police station where, through the theories of the scientist/philosopher de Selby, he is introduced to "Atomic Theory" and its relation to bicycles, the existence of eternity (which turns out to be just down the road), and de Selby's view that the earth is not round but "sausage-shaped." With the help of his newly found soul named "Joe," he grapples with the riddles and contradictions that three eccentric policeman present to him.

- Brain Worms 088 / The Year 200 by Agustin RojasThe Star of the East, London
A disparaging examination of the Castro regime that combines cryogenic freezing, artificial intelligence and surveillance with evil wizards, time travel and killer robots in a gripping adventure story. The peace of Tranquil Grove is violently disturbed when the Imperial Service's Hydras awake from a 200-year sleep and implant the consciousness of a sadistic, lascivious torturer and a desperate aging secret agent into the minds of a film-obsessed boy and his mother, an 'emotional engineer.' Drawing as much from the realms of the adventure novel, spy thriller and political satire as from hard science fiction and fantasy, THE YEAR 200 is on the one hand steeped in hard science and prophetic in its address of cryogenic freezing, artificial intelligence and surveillance, and on the other full of the action and intrigue brought on by evil wizards, time travel and killer robots. A cult classic and Cuban SF father Agustín de Rojas's most popular work, de Rojas critiques the Castro regime by holding it against its own impossible standards. An imaginative and bold social extrapolation and nuanced political parable, THE YEAR 200 brings contemporary trajectories to their logical extremes and asks, What does 'the greatest good for the greatest number' really mean?
