Unlocking the Awesome Power of Refactoring at Work - talk and workshop

We we are delighted to host a session on refactoring! The event will kick off with a talk by Hemal Varambhia, a senior technical coach at Simply Business. This will be followed by a hands-on session where attendees can try out the ideas from Hemal’s talk.

Talk Overview: over a period of 5 years, Hemal started refactoring a domain partition after it was added to a service. He used the Simple Design Dynamo, starting by improving names and then minimising duplication. By the end of last year (2024) the ports and adapters architecture began to surface and some of the elements of strategic domain-driven design. This presentation details the journey Hemal followed, the feedback and signals he received whilst doing so and what could happen next.

Speaker Biography: Hemal Varambhia is a senior technical coach at Simply Business, an insurtech based in London. Prior to his career in software development, he was an atomic and molecular physicist at UCL, in which he holds a doctorate. Outside of software development, Hemal enjoys reading and taking long walks and still maintains a strong interest in physics.
