Visit John Keats House in Hampstead!
Details
Come along on Sunday 30th March to visit John Keats House in Hampstead!
About Keats and the house
John Keats (1795 - 1821) was a romantic poet who only started writing poetry in the last 6 years of his life.
His poems weren't that well received during his lifetime, but his reputation grew after his death and by the end of the 19th century he had become one of the most loved English poets. The poetry of Keats is characterised by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes. Today his poems and letters are some of the most popular and most analysed in English literature.
He lodged at the house with his friend Charles Brown from December 1818 to September 1820, his most productive years and according to Brown, "Ode to a Nightingale" (listen to it here) was written under a plum tree in the garden.
While living in the house, Keats fell in love with and became engaged to Fanny Brawne, who lived with her family in the house next door. In late 1820 Keats became increasingly ill with tuberculosis and was advised to move to a warmer climate. He moved to Rome and died in 1821 aged only 25 years old.
