Visit the London Mithraeum - the Roman Temple of Mithras!
Details
Come along on Saturday 13th December to visit the London Mithraeum, otherwise known as the Roman Temple of Mithras.
About the exhibition
The Temple of Mithras, dated to the 3rd century, was discovered during the building of Bucklersbury House in 1954 (after WW2 bombing destroyed the previous building on the site).
After Bucklersbury House was completed, the temple was placed nearby for people to view. Bucklersbury House was demolished in 2010 for the new Bloomberg building to be built (which opened in 2018) and now the temple is back in situ in the new Bloomberg building. The temple is also set underground at what would have been street level in Roman times.
The Temple of Mithras
The temple was built in the mid-3rd century and dedicated to Mithras or perhaps jointly to several deities popular among Roman soldiers. When it was originally built, it would have stood on the east bank of the now covered-over River Walbrook.
Parallel to the construction work of the Bloomberg building, the Museum of London Archaeology led a team of over 50 archaeologists in further excavations of the site. The excavation recovered more than 14,000 Roman items, including a large assembly of tools. The varied objects are thought to have been brought to the site in landfills and soils collected elsewhere and laid down to improve the marshy banks of the River Walbrook during the rebuilding of London after the Boudican revolt of AD60 or 61.
