Come along on Saturday 10th January to visit 18 Stafford Terrace, otherwise known as Sambourne House!

About the house
18 Stafford Terrace, built in the early 1870's was the former home of Edward Linley Sambourne (1844 - 1910) who was the illustrator/cartoonist of 'Punch' magazine.

Sambourne had a life long passion for drawing and excelled at the grotesque and fanciful caricature of people and animals. He began working for Punch when he was just 23, and continued to contribute weekly until the year before his death. He also illustrated many books, including the 1885 edition of Charles Kingsley’s Water Babies, and a collection of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tales.

He lived in the house with his wife Marion and their two children for 35 years and its now Grade II listed. Today the house is a fine example of middle-class Aestheticism; its influences can still be seen permeating throughout the house, from decorative Sunflower motifs in the stained glass windows to the fine selection of William Morris wallpapers that hang within the rooms through to the displayed collection of blue-and-white Chinese import porcelain.

The visit is self-guiding.
