Workshop with Rotem Sivan
Details
Toulouse Lautrec Jazz Club host a workshop this Wednesday, 15 October, with NYC guitarist Rotem Sivan, lauded by the New York Times as "more than a very good young guitar player" and by Downbeat magazine as a "remarkable talent". Expect practical tools, musical insight, and the kind of real-world advice that only comes from years on the bandstand.
What to expect
In this hands-on masterclass, Rotem opens up his playbook on:
- Melodic & compositional approaches: fusing classical composition techniques with modern jazz harmony.
- Improvisation methods: exploring motivic development, voice leading, rhythmic displacement, use of space.
- Technique & sound: phrasing, tone shaping, dynamics, effects & gear insights.
- Interaction & feel: working within a rhythm section, comping, responding to the groove.
- The working musician: touring, composing, building an audience, social media & sustaining creativity.
Who it’s for
Intermediate to advanced guitarists will gain the most, though motivated beginners are welcome to attend, listen, learn, and ask questions.
Format
- Short performance & demonstration by Rotem
- Exercises & guided practice you can try on the spot
- Open Q&A + “hot-seat” coaching (bring a tune, a solo, or 8-16 bars if you’d like feedback)
What to bring
Your guitar, a notebook, and one piece you’re comfortable with — perhaps a standard or a composition you like. We’ll provide an amp / sound setup.
Why Rotem?
Rotem studied classical composition and jazz performance with honours, tours globally, performs at major festivals & top jazz clubs, and teaches workshops in leading schools. His blend of compositional sophistication and improvisational freedom make this workshop a rare opportunity.
Tickets are priced at £20 + booking fee and should be booked directly with Toulouse Lautrec on their website at https://toulouselautrec.co.uk/etn/rotem-sivan-workshop/
