⛰️ NEW Hiking Carneddau Mountains & Aberglaslyn Gorge in Snowdonia

Needs a location

£218.00

#################

This hike is now FULL. However, we're repeating it on 8-9 October! https://www.meetup.com/londonsocialhiking/events/288232008/

We’ve created a list of FAQs to help you out.
The self-driving option is now available (see below).

#################

The Snowdonia National Park boasts vast areas of natural beauty and unique scenery. It is also known as ‘Eryri’, a Welsh name that can be translated as ‘the place of the eagles’. Covering 838 square miles, it is the largest and oldest national park in Wales. There are nine mountain ranges here and they cover over half of the national park’s surface.

On this new weekend trip, we'll explore the Carneddau mountains in northern Snowdonia – an absolute must-do for any hiker! This mighty and wild mountain range is home to seven of the highest peaks in Wales, also known as the Welsh 3000s (15 mountains in Wales over 3,000 feet). On Saturday, we'll climb Carnedd Llywelyn (1,064m), Carnedd Dafydd (1,044m) and Pen yr Ole Wen (978m) – the third, fourth and seventh highest peaks in Wales, respectively. On our way up, we'll enjoy dramatic views over the Ogwen Valley, the Glyderau mountain range and the distinctive pyramidal peak of Tryfan. There will be a short section of grade 1 scrambling – a great introduction to those who are new to it! Once at the top, we'll follow the breathtaking ridge, with the shimmering waters of Ffynnon Lloer lake below, and then descend to the beautiful natural lake of Ffynnon Llygwy. A truly memorable day in the hills!

Sunday will be much more relaxing. After breakfast, we'll head to one of Snowdonia’s prettiest villages – Beddgelert. The walk will take us to the spectacular Pass of Aberglaslyn, through the narrow gorge, with the Afon Glaslyn raging alongside us. We'll pass Gelert’s Grave, which, according to the legend, marks the final resting of place of Gelert, the faithful dog of the medieval Welsh Prince Llewelyn. The trail includes stunning Llyn Dinas (lake), scenic Cwm Bychan (valley) and fine views of the peaks of the Snowdon range. We'll finish our hike at Beddgelert village, where we'll enjoy a delicious lunch. If you're an ice-cream fan, don't forget to visit the famous Glaslyn ice-cream parlour – truly one of the best (and also the oldest) in Snowdonia! 🍦

On this hike, we'll pass through many picturesque Cotswold villages and towns, such as Bourton-on-the-Water, Lower Slaughter, Upper Slaughter and Naunton. The whole walk is within the protected Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the largest of the 38 AONBs in England and Wales.

This hike is featured in the 100 Outstanding British Walks collection, come and discover why!

HIKE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Discover the picture-postcard village of Lower Slaughter. This quaint village sits beside the sleepy River Eye and is known for its attractive limestone cottages in the traditional Cotswold style.

Join us for a very special trip as we head to Dorset to discover the dramatic and famous Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage coastline! Stretching 95 miles between Old Harry Rocks and Orcombe Point, the Jurassic Coast – England’s first Natural UNESCO World Heritage Site – is the most geologically diverse coastline in the world. The exposed cliff sections allow us to look back across 185 million years; dinosaur remains have been found here, and it’s a fossil-hunter’s paradise.

Starting from the beautiful beach of Kimmeridge Bay, the path will take us to the iconic natural limestone arch of Durdle Door and the famous scallop-shaped bay of Lulworth Cove with its white pebble beach and crystal clear waters. On our way, we'll pass the hidden gems of Mupe and Worbarrow Bays, the Fossil Forest, containing the most complete fossil record of a Jurassic Forest in the world, and the extraordinary small cove and geologist’s delight, Stair Hole. Most of the route follows the cliff-top trail, with stunning panoramic views of sweeping bays, folded cliffs and the sea. This is a strenuous hike, with 700 metres of ascent and three stiff climbs, but all of your efforts will be well rewarded by the jaw-dropping beauty around you! 🤩
