METALS 200 - Introduction to torch use

• What is a torch and why is it used in jewelry and metal craft? Examples.
• Learn about types of fuels and torches available at the Jewelry and Metal Craft Shop.
• Stay safe around torches and fuel tanks
• Understand the basic interaction between the fuel, the flame, the amount of heat, and the temperature of the work piece and why that is important
• Resources for learning more

METALS 201: Using single-fuel torches

• Identify and understand the purpose and care of the tools and equipment at the soldering station
• Identify parts of a torch system and learn how to set it up and shut it down.
• Practice setting up, lighting and shutting down single-fuel torches: Butane, and Acetylene
• Observe creative techniques that are possible by using a torch to heat metal, e.g.: Balling wire, Enameling on copper, Applying a heat patina, Firing Metal Clay, Fold Forming, Chasing/Repousse, Texturing, Reticulation. Casting can require a dual fuel torch (this is the 202 Dual Fuel Torches class.) Casting class is a separate technique class.
• Practice with the torches to anneal, solder, and patina.
• *Begin the certification sampler or project and work through the certification checklist
• Set up a time with the instructor to complete the certification project/sampler.

  • Worth repeating: Completion of the sampler or project for certification will be done after one or more additional sessions you schedule with the instructor. We suggest planning to attend the next Open Studio session (first and second Saturday from 1-3pm) or schedule a mutually convenient time with the instructor. This is done to reinforce the elements of safety instruction over time and is at no additional cost. This step may be expedited at the instructor's discretion if you can demonstrate prior experience.

This class (METALS 200-201) is a prerequisite for METALS 202: Dual Fuel torch use and METALS 309 : Casting. Both are available upon request.
