Griffith Park Semi Beginner Hike @ Merry Go Round Lot

  • Jun 4, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • Griffith Park

We'll do our traditional semi beginner hike. It's a semi hilly 4 mile/600 foot hike. This hike is @ 90 minutes.  Most of the elevation gain is going up @ 200 steps in the middle of the hike.

Legend for hikes: These hikes run year 'round every Tuesday. In the leader's (subjective) mind, the hikes are generally easiest the first Tuesday of the month and most challenging the last Tuesday of the month, with everything progressive in between. Beginners are encouraged to come to the first Tuesday of the month. Beginners will receive doses of encouragement the second Tuesday of the month to keep up if unable. The 3-4-5 Tuesday's of the month it is expected anyone that can't keep up with the leader will turn back

The fine print:
Wildlife (snakes, bobcats, mountain lions etc) seen in the park, be aware of your surroundings and stay alert at all times. Polite dogs on leashes are welcomed!

Bring Along:

Hiking boots and at least 1 Liter Water. Layered clothing in case it's cold. Long pants in case it's hot, to prevent being bitten by insects. Mosquito and tic spray (available at Sports Chalet) are recommended.

No bright (white) flashlights. Red, Blue flashlights are ok.
If you get to the lot after we meet, Sierra Club hikes start at 7:00PM on the opposite end of the lot.
We do start ON TIME, no matter how much traffic is on the freeways, inside the park, including if our parking lots are being used by movie crews. Allow yourself enough time for any unexpected surprises.

From 134 Freeway:
(Note, if you are not familiar with Griffith Park Drive, this is a dark single lane route. You are better off taking I5 directions)

Exit Forest Lawn. (If coming from Westbound go straight, from Eastbound, Go Right). Make a left on Zoo Drive. Make a right hand turn on Griffith Park Drive. Road weaves through Griffith Park. Continue on road until you hit Crystal Springs Road. Make a right hand turn on Crystal Springs. There's no street sign at the next stop sign, but there should be a sign in the median stating the Merry Go Round is to the right. Make a right hand turn. Continue up the road. The road forces you to make a sharp right hand turn into a parking lot. Go through the parking lot. You'll hit a small dark road (it's lit if it's daylight savings time) for a short period of time, followed by a brightly lit lot. Park in the back of the lot (the part you entered in). Meet at the back of the lot at the back side of the "yield" sign, near the driveway entrance to the lower parking lot. You won't be able to see the actual yield sign, but you'll see the pole.

From Interstate 5 (either direction)
Go West on Los Feliz. Make a right on Riverside drive into Griffith Park. Go two stop signs and make a left turn.

Where to meet: See above. If you know the park well, it is Merry Go Round Lot #2, just at the path to the lower lot.

The hike was fun and the people were nice. Unfortunetely, I didn't finish the whole hike but nevertheless enjoyed it.

I followed the direction to the point. It was very detailed HOWEVER, should have said, "make a LEFT at 2nd STOP sign". Did not say that and we got lost. Then got there there was a film crew with vans and trucks in the way. By the time we parked we were couple of minutes late, RAN to try to catch up with the group and lost them at a fork. Needless to say it was not a good first time experience. We will do it again now this time we know where to meet. The Sierra Club wanted us to join them in the hike but we declined and did our own. Btw, we were a little early but because of the directions, we got lost :'(. Will try next time :D

@lee. No big deal, lee. I'm not trying to get into anything with u. All I said was seriously the direction read "2 stop signs" then said sharp right turn did not say make a left at stop sign or pass stop sign. I will know that for next time. Just disappointed cuz we didn't get to join with the group I joined this group through a "meetup" network. "Hoping" to meet ppl and get to know ppl, is all. 10 min is good we actually saw the tail end of the team just couldn't catch up then there was a fork on the road and we lost them :'(

Once again Jane....you provoke a response whether you want to or not. There are 2 directions he provided...you read the wrong one. One of them says turn right and the other turn left. It just depends if you enter the Park from the North or from the South. You just did not read the correct driving directions. Please Go back to the Description and re-read it please so i don't have to keep correcting or answering you. One of the most common problems we have with people who cannot find the location is that they do not read all the descriptions that are given by the hiking leader.

Is it just me or does the location link point to a tmobile ad page? (Using Meetup app for Android on tmobile)

    • Lee Z.

Meetup App may or may not work well, but computer links are not working too well either. I will post an aerial map of driving directions to lot 2.

Newcomer here, with one question, where can we park our cars?

    June 4, 2013

    • Lee Z.

Parking Lot #2 as Craig mentions. I will add a map link near the bottom of description, and see if that doesn't help you.
