Last minute: Peter Strauss Ranch to MASH site hike!

This is part of my series, that follows different trails in and around Malibu Creek state park, aside from the standard route. In the past I've led hikes that started from the Paramount Ranch to the MASH site, as well as the Grasslands Trail to Tapia County Park.

This hike will begin at the Peter Strauss Ranch, home to a nice creek with some nice sycamore trees and our route will take us through a small residential area to a trail that goes to the MASH site from the west.  There will be plenty of parking - this is a quiet park.

The hike will be about 4-5 miles, just slightly, and I mean slightly longer than the standard route to the MASH site with not much elevation gain.

As there are picnic tables, please bring some healthy snack to share, and we can make a small light picnic lunch at the MASH site.

You know the usual, wear appropriate footwear, dress for the weather, sunscreen, some basic first aid stuff, water, camera, etc.

Look forward to seeing you there!

One nice thing about hiking in an almost flat area is that people don't run out of breath and can have conversations with each other throughout the hike. That was a nice change from what I so far did before. I don't mind steep hills though.

Thanks Bob for a great hike! I really enjoyed the mini, rock scrambling at the beginning of our hike ;-) The weather, scenery, and company were marvelous! I had a wonderful time. Can't wait to see y'all on future hikes!!!

The beginning of the hike was definitely more adventurous that I had expected. I suppose reading the description more carefully in the future will be a good idea. Still, the weather was beautiful and I enjoyed hiking to the M.A.S.H. site from a different direction, since I had done it several times before from the trail that begins in Malibu Creek State Park.

    Can we bring leashed dogs?

    May 24, 2013

    • Terry

No. Malibu Creek is a State Park and no dogs are allowed in any CA State Park. Rangers give citations to dog owners costing over $200.

Hi friends! Just wondering if we are doing a picnic lunch at the end of the trail? I'm inquiring cuz I'm trying to figure out what to bring. I was thinking of making some kind of side (hummus, bruschetta, or something) and we can dip with bread. I can put it in the cooler. I can make that if the picnic is near the car area (since the cooler will be in the car during the hike).if not, then I can bring something convenient like granola bars or fruits. Thx. :)

I have done (and even led) many hikes in that State park, and sometimes to the M*A*S*H site. On most weekend docents post signs and photos from the TV series. It has been many years since I hiked from the Strauss Ranch.
